My friend and I made this colorful ice cream shop near the Vice President’s residence our last food stop in D.C. before heading back to NYC. Homemade ice cream (over 100 flavors throughout the year!) plus the fact that Max and his wife still run the shop themselves (this is their 19th year) were too appealing to pass up. I’d read a lot of raving reviews about their pumpkin ice cream, but unfortunately it wasn’t in season. When asked what the most popular flavor was, Max exclaimed that every flavor was the most popular flavor, and every flavor was the best flavor, otherwise they wouldn’t make those flavors anymore. Hmm, that wasn’t going to make my decision any easier.
The first flavor that caught my eye was PB & J. It’s hard for me to turn down anything with peanut butter. I asked Max for a sample, and it did indeed remind me of a PB & J sandwich. Staring at the menu with indecision, Max headed to the back room and his wife came out. We asked her if she had a favorite flavor, and she replied, all of the flavors are our favorite flavors, otherwise we wouldn’t make them. Hmm. Ok. Still not helpful.
I was feeling like something fruity, so I finally asked for a sample of the banana ice cream. I don’t see banana very often (or blueberry for that matter – I love blueberry ice cream – why don’t people make more blueberry ice cream?? I digress), but this was the BEST banana ice cream I’ve ever had. It had loads of real banana bits embedded into the ice cream, and it wasn’t too sweet. An ice cream-ified banana. Yum.
I wish I had prepared a cooler so I could buy a pint of banana to take home, but I’ll just have to wait until next time. Maybe when they also have the pumpkin flavor in stock.
